Many businesses are keen to adopt SDGs to get a competitive edge. There are certain challenges in realigning the present working scenario for sustainable development, which is a primary concern for society. Various firms are adopting sustainable engineering (SE) practices to tackle such issues. Artificial intelligence (AI) is an emerging technology that can help the ineffective adoption of sustainable practices in an uncertain environment. In this regard, there is a need to review the current research practices in the field of SE in AI. The purpose of the present study is to comprehensive review the research trend in the field of SE in AI. Design/methodology/approach This work presents a review of AI applications in SE for decision-making in an uncertain environment. SCOPUS database was considered for shortlisting the articles. Specific keywords on AI, SE and decision-making were given, and a total of 127 articles were shortlisted after implying inclusion and exclusion criteria. Findings Bibliometric study and network analyses were performed to analyse the current research trends and to see the research collaboration between researchers and countries. Emerging research themes were identified by using structural topic modelling (STM) and were discussed further. Research limitations/implications Research propositions corresponding to each research theme were presented for future research directions. Finally, the implications of the study were discussed. Originality/value This work presents a systematic review of articles in the field of AI applications in SE with the help of bibliometric study, network analyses and STM.Item Circular economy practices in supply chain finance: a state-of-the-art review(Benchmarking: An International Journal, 2024-07-30) Patra, Soumya Prakash; Wankhede, Vishal Ashok; Agrawal, RohitPurpose Supply chain finance is an emergent research area dealing with the financial performance of a firm throughout its supply chain. It has been drawing significant attention among industrial practitioners and researchers. However, there is need to identify improvements in supply chain finance (SCF) practices to ensure sustainable growth. In recent years, circular economy practices are being adopted worldwide with a motivation to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Moreover, integration of circular economy practices in the financial aspects of supply chain is still in infant age. Design/methodology/approach Adoption of circular SCF in firms enhances both restorative and regenerative capacities of the firm. In this regard, this study aims to review articles on circular practices in SCF. The study identified 329 articles related to circular practices and sustainable practices in SCF from the Scopus database. The shortlisted articles were reviewed and discussed. Findings The findings of the study help to recognize the most influential and productive research in circular SCF in terms of journals and trends. Further research is recommended to explore this area in depth to recognize potential integrating factors that help in smooth acceptance of circular finance in supply chains. Originality/value Bibliometric and network analyses were performed to identify research trends and networks in the field of circular SCF. In addition, emerging research themes in the field of circular SCF were identified and discussed, and research propositions are proposed to delineate future research directions.Item Unveiling the nexus of Industry 4.0 and Lean Six Sigma for sustainable development: insights from bibliometric and structural topic modeling analysis Available to Purchase(Industry 4.0, Lean Six Sigma, Lean, Sustainability, Sustainable manufacturing, 2025-03-25) Wankhede, Vishal Ashok; Agrawal, RohitPurpose This study aims to investigate the alignment between Industry 4.0 and Lean Six Sigma (LSS) in the context of sustainable development, focusing on the reasons for the growing attention to this integration and its implications for sustainability. Design/methodology/approach This research is designed based on literature overview using a review of bibliometric analysis and structural topic modeling of existing literature to provide evidence on the relationship among Industry 4.0 technologies, LSS practices and sustainable organizational performance. Findings It is evident from the study that incorporating Industry 4.0 technology with LSS can lead to a great sustainable manufacturing. With the use of digital tools such as Internet of Things sensors, advanced analytics and artificial intelligence, organizations significantly improve real-time monitoring, improve resource allocation and apply predictive maintenance, thus minimizing waste and the environmental effect. This approach also propels innovation and agility and fosters a culture of continuous improvement while evolving around higher-level topics around quality control and strategic management. Findings reveal that these integrations ensure operational excellence and sustainable development. Research limitations/implications The study provides guidelines for researchers and practitioners working on integration of Industry 4.0 technologies and LSS for enhancing the environmental and resource performance in manufacturing. Originality/value The novelty of the research is the integration of the knowledge existing on Industry 4.0 and LSS and its contribution in sustainable development perspectives. Moreover, this study may also be useful for other researchers because it provides a general overview of the trends and theoretical contribution that are practically confirmed in the empirical level.Item “Recover together, recover stronger”: an exploratory literature review on the recovery challenges of creative SMEs following the COVID-19 pandemic and proposed future recommendations(International Journal of Industrial Engineering and Operations Management, 2025-01-02) Akintola, Bolanle Maryam; Kumar, Anil; Chokshi, Hemakshi; Samadhiya, Ashutosh; Agrawal, RohitPurpose The rise of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has enabled researchers and industry professionals to reinvent their strategies for basic economic understanding. Two years after the outbreak of the pandemic, businesses are now trying to adapt to the impact it has brought, hoping to receive support as it did in the past. However, before this feat can be accomplished, it is imperative to understand the recovery hurdles created by the pandemic. This research aims to fill the literature gaps by examining the challenges during recovery within the creative small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) industry, as there are few relevant studies that focus on this field. Design/methodology/approach Through a methodical bibliometric literature review and network analysis, the paper intends to critically explore relevant recovery challenges within the field while providing answers to the appropriate research questions. A total of 43 articles were selected for an in-depth review. Using the analysis from the selected articles as a guide, a framework was developed to address the recovery challenges alongside the recommended propositions. Findings The findings from this paper suggest that a lack of synergy among four major categories (governmental, supply chain, organizational and stakeholders) contributes to recovery challenges within the field of research. Originality/value The review also offers clarification in understanding the current and upcoming trends within the creative industry, SMEs and COVID-19. This paper can thus help researchers, industry practitioners and managers discover and analyze the recovery challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.Item Entrepreneurial barriers in achieving sustainable business and cultivation of innovation: a resource-based view theory perspective(Management Decision, 2025-03-27) Agrawal, Rohit; Samadhiya, Ashutosh; Banaitis, Audrius; Kumar, AnilPurpose The study aims to highlight the barriers faced by the entrepreneurs toward achieving sustainability in business and innovation cultivation by offering solutions for academicians, practitioners and policymakers. The study uses the resource-based view (RBV) theory to discuss how an organization’s resources and capabilities influence the competitive ambience and barriers faced by entrepreneurs. Design/methodology/approach The present research uses grey-causal modelling (GSC) to analyse the barriers against successful entrepreneurship. Findings The research focuses on the usefulness of dynamic capabilities, managing and cooperating resources in the entrepreneurship setting. The paper highlights the importance of resource gathering and nurturing as a method to combat scarcity. This research further identifies that financial limitations, regulatory obstacles, challenges to sourcing qualified labour, poor infrastructure and technology, limited mentorship opportunities, lack of scalability, low initial cost barriers in product development and risk-averse attitudes are the major factors hindering entrepreneurs from obtaining sustainable business and innovation. Originality/value The contribution of this research to the literature is that it assesses RBV theory within the realm of entrepreneurship, providing a different perspective on resources and capabilities as well as the challenges faced by entrepreneurs. The systematic approach to the analysis and prioritization of various barriers is innovative, and it adds knowledge in this area.Item Can prescriptive analytics empower metaverse for sustainable operations and supply chains? In addition, prescriptive analytics-based methodological improvements might make Metaverse self-sustaining. This study assesses the current reflective discussion about the function of prescriptive analytics in Metaverse. It proposes alternative streams for additional research in this area so that we can understand the relationship between Metaverse, prescriptive analytics, sustainable operations and supply chain. Design/methodology/approach We use structural topic modeling (STM), a text-mining approach, to critically assess the literature and analyze 161 articles. Findings Primary and secondary topics were developed using STM findings for comparison. Also, a research framework is created by sketching out the study following the findings of the review. Finally, we conclude with a list of unanswered research issues that might serve as a starting point for future investigations into the role of prescriptive analytics in empowering Metaverse for sustainable operations. The transition to Industry 5.0 (I5.0) marks a pivotal moment in the industrial revolution, which aims to reconcile productivity with environmental responsibility. As concerns about the decline of environmental quality increase and the demand for sustainable industrial methods intensifies, experts recognize the shift toward the I5.0 transition as a crucial turning point. Design/methodology/approach This review study explores the convergence of green technological advancements with the evolving landscape of I5.0, thereby presenting a roadmap toward carbon neutrality. Through an extensive analysis of literature spanning from 2012 to 2024, sourced from the Scopus database, the research study unravels the transformative potential of green technological innovations, artificial intelligence, green supply chain management and the metaverse. Findings The findings underscore the urgent imperative of integrating green technologies into the fabric of I5.0, highlighting the opportunities and challenges inherent in this endeavor. Furthermore, the study provides insights tailored for policymakers, regulators, researchers and environmental stakeholders, fostering informed decision-making toward a carbon-neutral future. Government and other stakeholders are creating pressure to have a sustainable business model for efficient resource utilization and minimizing negative environmental impact. Many organizations have started focusing on sustainable and cleaner production through the adoption of net-zero economy (NZE) practices. Certain technological advancements are required to put these concepts into practice. Firms have begun to adopt digital technologies (such as big data analytics, artificial intelligence, and internet of things), and have been widely used in practice to achieve NZE. Is digitalization unlocking the potential of sustainable practices in the context of a net-zero economy? This question is still unanswered; therefore, this study aims to identify and analyze the drivers of digitalization that ensure sustainable practices to achieve net-zero economy. Through an extensive literature review and experts’ opinions, a list of drivers was identified. An empirical investigation was conducted to validate the identified drivers and further understand the influencing relationship among the drivers, Pythagorean fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (PF-DEMATEL) was employed. The findings of the study show that “high degree of automation,” “enhancing the flexibility in the manufacturing process,” and “real-time sensing capability” are the main influencer drivers among all cause group forces. The present study can be a source for industrial practitioners and academia that can provide significant guidance on how the adoption of digitalization can unlock the potential to achieve CE, which can lead us toward net-zero.
